What they see

Seeing a monster and recognizing a parallel self are the same act of perception, and nearly every mind edits both out. In the Broken, that editing has failed. They see both, all the time, whether they want to or not.

A goblin in a gentleman’s coat beside a lamp post. A sleeping self curled on the cobbles at their feet. Everyone else’s eyes slide past.

Their seeing is involuntary, and it drowns them.

Caul is not one of them

Caul sees across the membrane too, but he can mostly close that sight at will. The Broken are what he might have become.
