The film

The first Hollow, and what she is hunting. Narrated by Nora. Music: “Shores of Eternity” by Jonathan Yandel. Lethe designed by Audra Yandel.

In brief

Lethe began as one real person with one mind. Something hollowed her, and did it badly. What walks now isn’t her. It is the shape of her absence, animated by the need to fill itself.

She knows what she is. She chooses her targets by a logic she can defend, refuses the ones she can’t, and carries the weight of every mind she has emptied. She would stop if her nature allowed it.

The wound that drives her

She remembers that she used to be someone, but not who. She searches every mind she takes for the fragment that was hers. It was destroyed in the first forgetting: the one memory she needs is the one that no longer exists anywhere. Some buried part of her knows this, which is exactly why she cannot stop.

Stolen minds don’t fit. Each fragment she takes tears two new gaps where it doesn’t match. She grows louder and emptier at once: more voices, less self.

The Tell

Her body keeps score, and a mirror tells on her. Starved, rot wins. Recently fed, color and humanity bleed back, and for a moment she could pass for the woman she is hunting for. It never lasts.

The Ritual of Memory Melding

Lethe has no foothold in the physical world and cannot use the Tide. To cross, she needs exactly ten minds gathered in one place. Nine is nothing. She seeds the same quiet compulsion into strangers (gather, meet, come together) and each of them invents a private reason. When the tenth arrives, the links between them become the bridge she walks across. Break the circle and she is dragged back. Draw the strangers in, one at a time.

Ten strangers standing in a ring in a foggy courtyard at night, around a faint violet shimmer The ten strangers linked by gold threads, with Lethe standing solid in the centre

Nine planks where she needs ten. Locked out, until they aren’t.

Her lines

She won’t take children. She won’t take the ones who would welcome it as escape. When a target proves innocent she returns what she can, though a returned mind is never quite whole. These restraints cost her, and she keeps them.

How she is stopped

  • Break the circle. Pull one mind out before the meld completes.
  • Resist the seeding. Anyone who recognizes the compulsion as foreign and refuses to gather never becomes one of the ten.
  • Scatter the ten. If she is already across, breaking the link drags her back.
  • Tell her the truth. The memory she hunts was destroyed. There is nothing left to find. It won’t destroy her. It may be the only thing that lets her choose to stop.

She is a question with no answer left alive, and every search makes her less of a person and more of a wound.
